I’ve taken the plunge: the katzwebdesign.wordpress.com site is now mapped to seodenver.com, a domain I purchased last year. I’m not sure what the long-term plans are for this domain, but at least I’ll be building links to my own domain, not to WordPress.com…

Katz Web Design has completed a website for Mountain High Roofing, Inc., a Denver roofing company. The Mountain High Roofing website is built on WordPress. It’s what I would consider to be a medium level of customization; the website is a custom website design with a few plugin customization options. It allows Mountain High to […]
SEO and continuing education It’s easy to know SEO concepts. It’s another thing to put them into good use and do the work involved in optimizing a site. Yesterday, I was at a barnes and noble and saw the book SEO Bible. I flipped through the pages and I knew everything I saw. But if […]
Update: the new White House Website is launched! The new White House website design: what to expect? We know who President-Elect Barack Obama’s web designers were: SimpleScott, and later Walker Hamilton too. My sources tell me (don’t you have sources? 🙂 ) that Scott Thomas and Walker Hamilton are no longer working with the Obama or Change.gov website. Scott […]
Google’s OneBox results getting smarter Recently, Google seems to have updated their algorithm for when they show the mapped results (or, “OneBox”). It used to be that the OneBox would show up when viewing 10 results at a time for many most local searches. Now, the OneBox only shows up when viewing locally relevant industries or […]
Update: Now use the SEO WordSpinner plugin to implement this concept.Use the get_seo_spin() PHP function in your theme’s footer.php file. Footer links are dropping in SEO value How to stay relevant while getting great links As a web designer and SEO, I place links in the footers of most of my designs. Clients don’t mind […]
jQuery validator annoyances
For all of you that use jQuery and use the Validator plugin, you may have been getting this error in Internet Explorer 6: jQuery.Validator is null or not an object This code will break any jQuery below your validation code, and will thoroughly piss you off. The fix is simple: use the minified version (jquery.validate.min.js) javascript […]
Thanks to hbrinkman for the photo This holiday season has already been busy for SEOs like Katz Web Design, but it seems like it’s going to get even busier. There’s a delicate balance between neglecting your business for your blog, and neglecting your blog because of your business. Right now, I’m too busy to […]
My SEO Statistics are 42% Better than Yours
In working on the content for my new web site, I was working on ways to display the SEO ranking statistics. I came up with this concept of scaling the text relative to the % of clicks they get. The SEO statistics in this way are pretty dramatic: The #1 Result: receives 42% of all […]
While working on a recent website, I became frustrated by the lack of nofollow support in many WordPress functions. Make that, most WordPress functions. There are a few WP functions that I wanted to add nofollow to, so here’s a list and a download link:
Barack Obama: Screw the Auto Industry
After congratulating the President-Elect on his win, I wrote a quick note about how frustrated I am with the auto industry. My main reason for writing is that I want to voice my strong disapproval of bailing out the auto industry. Detroit has lagged behind in innovation and proven themselves incompetent and greedy. Auto makers […]
Visit Katz Web Design-developed SteveSpangler.com As announced in August, Steve Spangler chose Katz Web Design to develop their blog. Their previous blog was aging and didn’t provide the functionality they needed. I was provided with a design by Blake Sumrall (at Steve Spangler, Inc.) and was tasked with converting it to a website. The development […]
Colorado Holiday Party!
I am thrilled: my wife just informed me that Colorado Open Lands‘ holiday party is being held at the most delicious and prestigious restaurant around: The Fort in Morrison, Colorado. That’s great news because The Fort is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to…and it’s priced accordingly! A quick plug as well: one of my […]
Firefox gets all the cool toys As I’ve written before, Firefox SEO — not Safari — gets all the glory. One of the great things about Firefox is the Add-ons (plugins) that extend its functionality. For web developers and SEOs, it’s vital to easily see what rank your website has when doing searches. There are tons […]
After talking with my mom (@adiehl on Twitter) about Twitter, the “microblogging” website that asks you to explain “What are you doing?” in 140 characters, it prompted me to write yet another How to Twitter posts, but a less technical and more practical how to get started guide. Twitter is not blogging. It’s not RSS. […]
For those of you who care about whether or not your quotes are quotation marks, apostrophes or primes, here’s are simple way to write single-curly and double-curly quotes in Mac OSX…and unlock the secret to, um, some mysteries.
Sometimes you may want to vertically align a block item, but the CSS-only vertical aligning methods don’t make you feel clean. Personally, I hate having to style items as a table/table cell to get them to vertically align in Internet Explorer. jQuery to the rescue. Using a jQuery vertical align snippet as my base code, I modified it […]
Here’s the deal: I wanted to be able to temporarily see all the posts at once in the WordPress Administration, so I went into the wp-admin folder, and poked around, and became frustrated: it wasn’t that simple! Go to /wp-admin/includes/post.php and scroll to line 517. You will see wp(“post_type=post&what_to_show=posts$post_status_q&posts_per_page=15&order=$order&orderby=$orderby”); Change the posts_per_page value to whatever […]
Convention’s tourism bump slight For a few tourist attractions inside Denver, the convention actually hurt business….Not knowing what to expect, some restaurants stocked up on food, extended hours or added staff, only to be disappointed…. The Denver Post – 1, 2 DNC spending bonanza stays downtown The DNC spending spree apparently didn’t ripple far beyond […]
